Lawrence, Mark

Lawrence, Mark - The Broken Empire.

The huge Grim Oaks Press signed limited edition is a +950 page stunner containing: Prince of Thorns, King of Thorns, and Emperor of Thorns, as well as a new, original Jorg short story written just for this omnibus. Additional artwork by Jason Chan and Nate Taylor (who are co-signatories). We have yet to read any of Mark Lawrence's work, but the reviews on the trilogy are highly favourable however, there are some detractors of the violence in the series, particularly the first book.

The blurb for ‘Prince of Thorns’:

"Before the thorns taught me their sharp lessons and bled weakness from me I had but one brother, and I loved him well. But those days are gone and what is left of them lies in my mother's tomb. Now I have many brothers, quick with knife and sword, and as evil as you please. We ride this broken empire and loot its corpse. They say these are violent times, the end of days when the dead roam and monsters haunt the night. All that's true enough, but there's something worse out there, in the dark. Much worse.

Grim Oaks Press is itself something new, established by Shawn Speakman to pay of his medical bills with the help of a variety of SF writer friends incl. Terry Brooks, they published the anthology ‘Unfettered’ which did very well. Since then they have a number of books in the works, a sizeable portion of profit going to charity.

Road Brothers (The Broken Empire - 14 short stories)

This is a collection of fourteen stories of murder, mayhem, pathos, and philosophy, all set in the world of the Broken Empire.

Within these pages, you will find tales of men such as Red Kent, Sir Makin, Rike, Burlow and the Nuban, telling of their origins and the events that forged them. There is Jorg himself, striding the page as a child of six, as a teenage wanderer and as a young king. And then there is a tale about Prince Jalan Kendeth – liar, cheat, womaniser and coward.

To the new reader, welcome to a lawless world where wit and sword are the most useful weapons, and danger lurks as much in candle-lit palaces as in dark alleys and dense woodland. To those who have already journeyed with Jorg, we hope you will enjoy renewing old acquaintances with your favourite characters.

Harper Signed, Lined, Dated Hardcover First Edition

This edition features the late Kimberly Kincaid‘s artwork which she created back in 2013, inspired by Mark’s books! On her blog she wrote at the time :

“I should be working on something else right now. Shhh. Don’t tell on me, please. I HAD to take a break from “the commission” so I don’t go postal. I’ve read a few books recently that have me thinking about certain characters and how to visualize them. This is Jorg and yes, he is the bad boy of the bunch. He’s from the Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence. It’s one of those dark fantasies that isn’t my usual fare (glad I stayed with it). But this character is so complex and offers such a challenge that I wanted to try. This is extremely rough…but I like what’s going on in his eyes. Yes, that is a scar on his face. I will keep playing with this at recess time. But for now, back on the clock.”

And wow! there really is something going on with the eyes...

One Word Kill (Impossible Times #1)

In January 1986, fifteen-year-old boy-genius Nick Hayes discovers he’s dying. And it isn’t even the strangest thing to happen to him that week.

Nick and his Dungeons & Dragons-playing friends are used to living in their imaginations. But when a new girl, Mia, joins the group and reality becomes weirder than the fantasy world they visit in their weekly games, none of them are prepared for what comes next. A strange—yet curiously familiar—man is following Nick, with abilities that just shouldn’t exist. And this man bears a cryptic message: Mia’s in grave danger, though she doesn’t know it yet. She needs Nick’s help—now.

He finds himself in a race against time to unravel an impossible mystery and save the girl. And all that stands in his way is a probably terminal disease, a knife-wielding maniac and the laws of physics.

Challenge accepted.

One choice. Two possible timelines. And a world hanging in the balance.

It’s the summer of 1986 and reluctant prodigy Nick Hayes is a student at Cambridge University, working with world-renowned mathematician Professor Halligan. He just wants to be a regular student, but regular isn’t really an option for a boy-genius cancer survivor who’s already dabbled in time travel.

When he crosses paths with a mysterious yet curiously familiar girl, Nick discovers that creases have appeared in the fabric of time, and that he is at the centre of the disruption. Only Nick can resolve this time paradox before the damage becomes catastrophic for both him and the future of the world. Time is running out—literally.

Wrapped up with him in this potentially apocalyptic scenario are his ex-girlfriend, Mia, and fellow student Helen. Facing the world-ending chaos of a split in time, Nick must act fast and make the choice of a lifetime—or lifetimes.

Game on.
