Brooks, Terry

Terry Brooks has written more than 21 bestsellers - almost exclusively in the fantasy genre. His first book ‘The Sword of Shannara’ debuted in 1977 (we have a copy of the true first edition - export copy , there’s a bit of a story to the true firsts), the book itself has drawn extensive criticism from critics who believe that Brooks derived too much of his novel from Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings'. In 1978, influential fantasy editor Lin Carter denounced 'The Sword of Shannara' as "the single most cold-blooded, complete rip-off of another book that I have ever read". Elaborating on his disapproval of the book, Carter wrote that "Terry Brooks wasn't trying to imitate Tolkien's prose, just steal his story line and complete cast of characters, and [Brooks] did it with such clumsiness and so heavy-handedly, that he virtually rubbed your nose in it".

Aside from the rocky start, Brooks did mature in style and his later works are far more original.

Angel Fire East by Terry Brooks

'Running with the Demon' was recognized immediately upon publication as a masterpiece, a bold departure that promised to revitalize contemporary urban fantasy and showcase Terry Brooks's vast storytelling gifts as never before. The second book of the series,' A Knight of the Word', raised expectations even higher. Now, in 'Angel Fire East', Terry Brooks brings his bestselling epic trilogy of good and evil to an unforgettable close.

As a Knight of the Word, John Ross has struggled against the tireless dark forces of the Void for twenty-five years. A rootless wanderer scarred as deeply by the magic he wields as by the unspeakable horrors he has witnessed in its service, Ross is driven by dreams that show the world reduced to blood and ashed by the Void and its minions. The grim future he dreams each night will come true unless he can stop them now, in the present. But for all his power, John Ross is only one man, while the demons he hunts—and which hunt him in turn—are legion.
